The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is embarking on a project to place a sand rail in the

Reedsport/ Winchester Bay areas. For many years we have patrolled the dunes and beach areas with

good equipment but not necessarily complete equipment to accomplish the task. With the increase

usage of the sand our need has become more critical. Along with the increase of sand usage, we have

observed an increase in those who do not respect the sand or other users. Many users from outside the

area have indicated they enjoy vacationing in our area, but with families, they don’t appreciate those

that don’t respect the sand. If these families choose to recreate in other areas, there will be a financial

impact on our community. A sand rail would complete our equipment needs, enabling us to patrol

problem areas of the dunes, stopping problems before they start, and encouraging a family environment.

We would also have reliable radio communications and the ability to transport arrested persons.

We are asking you to partner with us by your help in funding this program, in donation of either funds

and/or services. This is a worthwhile endeavor. Already many business, both local and from out of the

area, have made sizeable offers to make this happen. All comments from the sand users have been

very positive. Most tell us that they are concerned that the dunes remain open especially with all the

recent changes concerning camping and reduction of the riding area.

We’re asking for your help as the Sheriff’s office does not have the funds for this type of equipment nor

does the ATV committee. In the spirit of partnership all of our sponsors names will be listed on the

sand rail when it is finished, much like the DARE program did with their cars.
